First of all, you may be asking yourself, “What in the world are blending buds, and why would I want them?” Well, blending buds help provide an airbrushed finish without the hassle and mess of airbrush makeup. Pretty cool, right?
Blending buds are super easy to use too, which makes them even more of a must-have in your makeup bag. And what’s even better is that you can use them to apply primer, concealer, BB Cream, liquid foundation, and even power foundation! Don’t get me wrong, I still use makeup brushes, but these little beauties are perfect for adding a finishing touch!
So, how do you use them? It’s simple (and quick)! First, you want to soak the blending bud through with water. This stops the sponge from soaking up too much of your makeup product, which saves you money (another bonus).
Simply hold the bud in your hand under running water, and give it a few squeezes. Then, turn off the water, give it a few more squeezes to help remove excess water, and dab it on a towel. You want to make sure there is no dripping water while keeping it damp throughout.
Next, you’re ready to start your makeup application. As I mentioned before, you can use the blending buds for a variety of makeup products. If you’re using a liquid or creamy product, squirt a little onto the back of the hand not holding the bud. Then gently dip your bud into the product (like a painter dipping their brush into paint on a pallet). Start with a little, and add more as needed.
To use the bud, gently press and dab onto your face. Typically, this will give you more coverage since you’re using a dabbing motion versus a swiping motion. Let the bud do the work for you, and you’ll be able to achieve the airbrushed look.
And, now that you’ve used it, you’ll notice that there are makeup stains on it. Just like brushes, it’s important to keep your blending buds clean. Another good thing about these is that’s also easy to do! Like before, hold the bud in your hand, under warm water and give it a few squeezes. Apply some shampoo or anti-bacterial soap to the bud, and massage it in.
When rinsing it clean, keep holding and squeezing it under warm water until the water runs clear and free of bubbles. All of the makeup stains may not come out, and that’s OK! At least you’ve removed the makeup that built up inside.
Bonus tip – fill a microwave safe cup about 3/4 of the way with water, put your bud in it, and zap it in the microwave for no longer than forty-five seconds. This will help sanitize the bud. When the microwave beeps, carefully remove the cup, and let it sit until it cools. You don’t want to burn yourself.
Once cooled, squeeze out as much water as possible, and let it air dry. Do not put it in a bag or wrap it up in any way. This could cause mold to grow inside the bud, so be sure to leave it out to air dry.
